Description
Muslin jamdani is a type of fine, sheer, handloom-woven cotton fabric with intricate patterns. The fabric is made using a supplementary weft technique, which creates a fine base with a thicker thread weft that adds the patterns. The patterns are often delicate floral or creeper motifs, and the fabric is usually woven in muted or vibrant colors. Jamdani is believed to be a combination of ancient Bengal cloth-making techniques and muslins made by Bengali Muslims since the 14th century. The name “jamdani” comes from the Persian words jam, meaning “flower”, and dani, meaning “vase”.
Tangail Jamdani (Bangladesh): These jamdani sarees were woven in the Tangail district and have the customary large borders with lotus, lamp, and fish scale designs. Shantipur Jamdani (India) : These jamdani sarees are comparable to Tangail jamdanis and were produced in Shantipur, West Bengal.
